The world of console emulation on mobile devices is undergoing a true revolution. Just a few days ago, the team behind ARMSX2, known for its PlayStation 2 emulator for smartphones, surprised the community with the release of ARMSX3, an experimental port of RPCS3 for Android. Although it's a proof of concept , it's already capable of running some PlayStation 3 titles, and the progress in just one week has been remarkable.
This project represents a significant step towards full PS3 emulation on mobile phones. The developers have had to overcome numerous technical challenges, such as compiling shaders on Adreno GPUs and distributing tasks across high-performance, energy-efficient cores. Furthermore, the LLVM compiler configuration is now tailored to the installed chip, rather than using generic parameters.
A project that's off to a strong start
The first version of ARMSX3 was released just a week ago, but it has already received seven updates , bringing it to version 0.7.2. Among the new features, it now recognizes games in uncompressed folders and allows the installation of digital editions in PKG format along with RAP licenses. Trophies, save states, and support for ANGLE, a layer that translates graphics commands between different APIs, have also been added.
The developers have also improved firmware installation on low-end devices, fixed the pause functionality, and added automatic shader cache clearing along with the game. Since version 0.7, the emulator uses the Oboe audio system by default, and several changes have improved compatibility with graphics accelerators.
Compatible games and performance

The list of compatible games has also been expanded. Armored Core: For Answer and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) have already been declared playable. Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is now being added to the game, and Sonic Unleashed and the God of War III demo have begun loading. This doesn't mean they can be comfortably completed from start to finish, but progress is solid.
Regarding performance, Android Authority journalists tested the program on a Vivo X300 Ultra. Catherine ran at approximately 22 frames per second, and 3D Dot Game Heroes at 15. Skate 3 froze before launching, although the developers managed to run it on a less powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen2, where it displayed 20-30 FPS. The next stage will be to optimize performance and expand the list of compatible games.
Developers will also need to eliminate crashes, graphical glitches, and interface issues. No timeline has been announced for a more stable version, but initial results confirm that running PlayStation 3 games on modern Android smartphones is now technically possible . The first version of ARMSX3 is available for free download from GitHub.
ARMSX3 has become one of the most promising emulation projects of the moment. Despite being a proof of concept, its evolution in just one week demonstrates that PS3 emulation on mobile devices is not a pipe dream. With community support and the constant work of its developers, it wouldn't be surprising to see a stable version soon, allowing users to enjoy the great titles of Sony's console anywhere.
